Ultrasound revealed further nodules, consistent with a multinodular goitre. Fine needle aspiration confirmed the benign nature of the 'cold' nodule. In patients who appear to have a solitary thyroid nodule clinically, which is ΓÇÿcoldΓÇÖ on radionuclide scanning, neck ultrasound can be of value. It will show if the nodule is cystic or solid. Solitary solid thyroid lesions need further investigation because they may be malignant. The presence of unsuspected further nodules, however, usually indicates a multinodular goitre.
